Portsmouth v Gillingham HOME WIN
It’s fair to say Pompey have been poor this season. They languish in the lower reaches of the division with 12 points from nine matches and manager Kenny Jackett is under a lot of pressure. he might be a good bet for the next manager to lose his job, if you’re looking for an extra tip.
Despite this and despite Gillingham being above them, this is a game they should win. Yes, Pompey are dour at home and Jackett doesn’t seem to know his best side, but Gillingham’s position is a false one. They’ve won three and drawn four, but of their wins one came against Bolton’s kids (5-0) and the other against a poor Southend side (3-1).
Draws with Tranmere and Bristol Rovers were less than inspiring too and their current position of 15th is unlikely to be improved upon as the season draws on.
The Gills lack goals, discounting the five they got against Bolton would leave them level with Southend and on fewer than Wimbledon. Steve Evans has already blasted his side too; their defending against Tranmere in particular drawing his ire, as well as finding themselves 3-0 early against Oxford. Away from home, they average 0.8 goals per game from an xG of 1.18, meaning they’re not taking their chances and those two things combined are dangerous.
Portsmouth might be uninspiring at the moment, but in Marcus Harrison, John Marquis and Ronan Curtis they have a real attacking threat and in front of a big home crowd they should grab some points here.
