Sunderland supporters have come out in force on social media to widely condemn someone in the last 24 hours, and for once it’s not Jack Ross. Not entirely.
The Black Cats’ boss has seen fit to postpone his side’s match against Fleetwood Town due to international call ups. With three players named in their international squad, one of which is Tom Flanagan who barely plays, Ross had the option of going ahead or taking the break.
He’s taken the break and that’s brought Fleetwood manager Joey Barton to the newspapers. Barton has never been one who minces his words and he’s accused Sunderland of running scared of his side.
“At this moment, we’ll beat anyone, anywhere at any time,” he said.
“Smartly, Sunderland have decided to rearrange the game. If I was in their position and looked at their momentum, our momentum, their team and our team I would have done the same.
“If Joey Barton and Fleetwood rock into town and do what we can do and what we showed last season at home and away, with a group which is nowhere near as strong as it is now, for Jack Ross, we are the last team that you want to face given their situation.”
Barton, whose side are third and have only been beaten twice this season, is a figure everyone loves to hate and his comments have of course brought Wearsiders to their keyboards. With a court case impending, Barton does make an easy target but in amongst all of the vitriol one or two are still finding scope to lash out at their own boss.
