West Brom are the latest club to be linked with a move for Coventry City prospect Sam McCallum, as reported by the Express and Star.
Aston Villa, Leeds, Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest have all previously been linked with a move for McCallum, who joined Mark Robins’ side in 2018 from non-league Hearn Bay.
The 19-year-old left back only has 16 appearances to his name for the Sky Blues, but has impressed this season when called upon. After the double sending off at Portsmouth, he was handed a first team chance, starting the recent league encounter with Burton Albion, in which the Sky Blues drew 0-0.
The defender was released by Gillingham as a youngster and dropped out of the Football League. However, he still featured for England schoolboys and ended up at the Jamie Vardy Academy, the institution set up to promote non-league talent to Football League clubs.
It’s believed that the Baggies are now confident they can put together a deal to lure McCallum to the Hawthorns ahead of their rivals and keep him in the Midlands where he’s now settled.
Our View
Sam McCallum is one of those players who has impressed with his potential, rather than an extended run in the first team.
He’s made a handful of senior appearances, nothing more, but that’s enough to ensure he’s on a list of names for a number of scouts.
If he keeps getting first team exposure with Coventry he could follow the likes of James Maddison and Jordan Willis out of St Andrew’s and on to bigger clubs.
