Richie Wellens heaps praise on 24-year-old Swindon star

Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens has praised forward Jeshi Anderson for the way he’s bounced back from a tough summer, as reported by the Swindon Advertiser.

Anderson was told he was surplus to requirements over the summer and was free to leave the Robins, but no clubs came in to take him on. He bagged just five times in 48 fixtures last season and seemed to be at the end of his time at the County Ground.

He’s already scored three in 11 this season and has turned in some impressive outings for new boss Richie Wellens. Despite playing tough with him in the summer, the former Oldham boss was full of praise for the way the former Crystal Palace man has turned things around.

“Everyone is a brilliant manager with hindsight,” said Wellens.

“I’m getting all the credit because of the way I was with Keshi during the summer, but it could have backfired on me.

“I felt doing what I did was the right way to bring out the best in Keshi. I’d bet money that if I put the same asking price out now there would be a lot of takers, because he has been brilliant. And that’s all down to Keshi – and only him. I can only put things in place.”

Anderson spent time on loan at Doncaster, Bolton and Northampton whilst with Palace, but struggled to impress himself on the Eagles first-team plans. That led to a loan spell with Swindon, before a permanent switch.

He remains a doubt for this weekend’s fixture with Newport after being withdrawn early from the 1-0 win at Cambridge.

Our View

This is seemingly a great bit of psychology from Wellens, but the truth is if a club had come in with an offer for Anderson he wouldn’t be at the club.

The manager has ended up getting the best out of the player, but it’s more by luck than planning.

That’s not the point though; Swindon are doing well and Wellens’ hardline approach over the summer saw a high turnover of players. With 20 points from their opening ten fixtures, the Robins look on course for a solid promotion push.
