Christian Burgess believes that Portsmouth are not far away from moving up the table, despite their torrid start to the season, as reported by the club’s official site.
They were beaten 4-0 at home b Southampton this week in the EFL Cup, which on the face of it isn’t a terrible result. The Saints are a top-flight side whilst Pompey languish in the lower reaches of League One.
However, the intense rivalry between the two has made it another part of Kenny Jackett’s current plight, with the under-fire manager struggling to lift his side up the table.
Bolton Wanderers are the visitors this weekend and defender Burgess is backing his side to get a result and hopefully kickstart their season.
“When we’re on the pitch it’s just a case of 11v11, so we’ll be looking to dominate and get the victory,” the 27-year-old said.
“I don’t think we’re too far away and one positive performance could be the real kick-start that we need. We’ve got a strong squad and there’s probably guys on the bench who feel harshly done by, while the boys who are playing want to keep their spots.
“It’s always healthy to have that level of competition during a long and tough season. It’s certainly a plus for us.”
Pompey are currently 20th in the table with six points from seven matches. They’re without a win in the league since early August and will be hoping to give themselves a boost up the table this coming weekend against a struggling Bolton.
Our View
Portsmouth do look a fair way off they need to be; not in terms of quality but organisation and thrust.
They’ve got a good squad, arguably a top two squad, but they’re not delivering the goods. It’s much the same as last season but with different players.
That raises the question of whether the players are at fault, or the manager?
