Northampton Town goalkeeper attracting Championship interest

Northampton Town goalkeeper David Cornell is attracting attention from several Championship clubs as reported by HITC Sport.

The report claims the twenty-eight-year-old could be set for a move away from Sixfields after impressing so far this season.

The keeper is in the final year of his contract with the Cobblers and could be available for a bargain fee in January. HITC Sport understands from sources close to Northampton that scouts from the second tier have been tracking the progress of the former Swansea City stopper.

Cornell does have matchday Championship and Premier League experience, having featured on the Swansea bench sixty-seven times. However, he made only one outing for the Welsh outfit in the EFL Cup.

Although Cobblers boss Keith Curle would be reluctant to lose his services, the club may be forced to cash-in during the January window or risk losing him for free in the summer.

The former Wales Under-21 international has made eighty appearances for the Cobblers after signing for the club in the summer of 2016 following his release by Oldham Athletic. He signed a new two-year contract at Sixfields in 2018 and was linked with a possible move to Reading in the summer.

Our View

Cornell is a decent keeper, but we are not sure he is Championship quality.

Pete O’Rourke is usually a reliable source, but he wrote the Reading story in the summer that came to nothing.

Cornell may still leave, but he seems happy at Northampton and is heavily involved with the club’s community work.

We can’t see a move to the Championship, but in football, you never know.
