Leeds United are monitoring the progress of highly-rated Coventry City defender Sam McCallum as reported by Coventry Live.
The teenager is a product Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy, and he only signed for the Sky Blues in the summer of 2018. After some outstanding displays for Coventry’s Under-23 side, he was handed his first-team debut by boss Mark Robins in last season’s EFL Trophy.
The nineteen-year-old went on to make seven League One appearances last term, and his form was so impressive he dislodged the experienced Junior Brown as understudy to first-choice left-back Brandon Mason.
Brown has since been loaned out to Scunthorpe United, but McCallum has gone from strength to strength, signing a new three-year contract in March and making eight senior appearances so far this season, including six starts.
The former England schoolboy international failed to make the grade at Gillingham and slipped down the pyramid to Herne Bay in the Isthmian League before arriving at the V9 Academy where Sky Blues head of recruitment Chris Bedlam spotted him.
The report claims Leeds United are now tracking the prodigiously talented teenager.
Our View
Leeds get linked with almost every young player that shows potential in the lower leagues so the accuracy of the story needs questioning.
However, McCallum is pacy and good in the air with massive potential.
It should also be noted that Coventry has a successful model of finding young talent and selling them on for a profit, with Tom Bayliss to Preston the most recent example of many.
He would be an excellent signing for Leeds, but after Coventry’s start to the season, he could well be playing Championship football with the Sky Blues next season.
