Sunderland defender set for surprise League Two switch

Salford City have moved into pole position to capture Sunderland defender Jack Baldwin in what would be a huge coup for the club.

According to the Chronicle’s James Hunter, Baldwin is set to make a loan move to the League Two new boys, little over a year after leaving Peterborough United for Sunderland.

He had been the captain of Posh during his time there, but swapped London Road for the Stadium of Light last summer. The 26-year-old turned out 41 times for the Black Cats and became their preferred centre back alongside Tom Flanagan.

That’s not been the case during the early part of this season, with new signing Jordan Willis partnering Alim Ozturk at the back. With Flanagan offering cover, Baldwin’s days at the club have been numbered.

A move to Salford is still a bit of a shock; he’s been captain of a League One club and helped Sunderland to the top six last season, as well as a Wembley final.

Our View

Salford often get accused of throwing money at a situation, but this season their spending has been limited. That is surely going to change if they’re attracting Jack Baldwin to the club.

He’s going to be on healthy wages, certainly above the average wage in the basement division.

He’d walk into the Salford side and would likely be handed the captains armband too; he’s a cut above League Two for certain.
