Gillingham interested in 28-year-old midfielder

Gillingham boss Steve Evans is interested in Hearts midfielder Olly Lee as reported by Kent Online.

The twenty-eight-year-old made forty-one appearances for the Edinburgh outfit last season, finding the net six times and contributing twelve assists butĀ manager Craig Levine hasĀ told him he is free to leave the club.

Lee became increasingly frustrated after dropping out of the Jambos starting line-up in the second half of the campaign and is keen for a return to England, although a proposed move to Southend fell through earlier this month.

He is no stranger to Priestfield having enjoyed a brief spell with Gillingham earlier on in his career, playing seven games on loan from West Ham in 2011/12.

The former Birmingham City schemer also enjoyed a stint with Barnet and a couple of loan spells at Plymouth before eventually signing a permanent deal with Luton Town three years ago. He made one hundred and sixteen outings for the Hatters in two years, helping them to League Two promotion in 2018 before signing a three-year deal at Hearts.

The report claims there are several clubs interested in Lee but having watched the player on several occasions, Evans is hopeful of getting a deal over the line in the next twenty-four hours.

Our View

Lee has not pulled up any trees in Edinburgh, and he’s not popular amongst a section of the Hearts support, many of whom would probably offer to give him a lift south.

However, he was excellent for Luton and would be a decent addition for the Gills.

Evans appears confident he will get his man but many Gills supporters will be asking whether it is the right move, with the squad crying out for a new striker after the departure of Tom Eaves.

The controversial Scot has had a poor start to the campaign, and he needs to start winning if his decisions are not going to come under increased scrutiny.
