Colchester United pulled off a cup shock last night, downing Premier League side Crystal Palace on penalties.
A strong Palace side should have been in full control of the game; Connor Wickham, Christian Benteke, Andros Townsend and James McCarthy all played against The U’s, who are currently 17th in the basement division.
Despite the huge gulf in quality between the sides, it was hard to tell at times which team was which. Both had 11 shots at goal, with Palace hitting the target four times and Colchester twice.
The home side did have the lion’s share of possession as well as making many more passes, but a tough and resolute Colchester didn’t give an inch. after taking the tie to extra time, they snatched their opportunity and won 5-4 on penalties.
That’s sparked anger amongst the Palace fans, who expressed their anger in a disrespectful tirade on the club’s official Twitter feed.
The U’s might be in the basement division, but to label them as ‘joiner and plumbers’ shows a complete lack of understanding about our national game.
Here’s a selection of their responses.
