‘Fake news’ – Wimbledon striker responds to transfer rumours

Wimbledon slumped to their fourth League One defeat of the season at the Stadium of Light on Saturday in a gutsy performance that saw them level after half an hour.

Under the cosh for most of the ninety-minutes, the game starkly exposed the gulf in class and playing budget between the two clubs and the Black Cats eventually ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in front of 29,725 fans.

Apart from Kwesi Appiah’s headed equaliser, the main talking point amongst Dons supporters was the appearance once again of last year’s leading scorer Joe Pigott on the substitute bench. It prompted further speculation that the striker wanted to leave the club and is set to depart the Dons before the transfer window closes on September 2.

However, the twenty-five-year-old quickly moved to dispell the rumours by answering fans concerns on twitter, calling the rumours ‘fake news.’

Pigott is a supporter favourite at Kingsmeadow having scored twenty-four-goals since his arrival from non-league Maidstone in January 2018.

Reading were heavily linked with Pigott earlier in the summer, and former club Charlton were also thought to be amongst several Championship clubs keen on the forward.

However, a move to the second tier never materialised before the Championship transfer window closed over a week ago.

Our View

Good news for Wimbledon fans but there is still a week to go before the window closes and they will not rest secure until it shuts next week.

Pigott was prolific last season, and a move to one of League One’s big-spenders cannot be ruled out.

The question remains, why exactly is he on the bench?

Things move quickly in the window, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the speculation continues to hot up as the week progresses.
