Mansfield Town’s season goes from bad to worse as they’re set to lose another summer signing to injury this weekend, as reported by the Mansfield Chad.
The Stags were thought to be amongst the favourites for promotion this season but, despite a strong summer of recruitment, they’ve been hit by a number of issues off the field.
New signing Dion Donohue and first team midfielder Jacob Mellis are both currently suspended by the club after a breach of discipline and won’t be available for the weekend’s clash with Stevenage.
In addition to long term injured Bobby Olejnik and Craig Davies, recent recruit Andy Cook and midfield stalwart Neal Bishop are also out. That’s now also the case for striker Nicky Maynard, with summer capture Kellan Gordon and Hayden White also struggling.
“Kellan Gordon had a bit of a bad reaction after the game and his back’s gone into spasm,” said boss John Dempster.
“He is getting treatment as we speak and then he will be going to the swimming pool for a couple of sessions. He is 50-50 for Saturday. Hayden White had a whack on the side of where he broke his leg.
“There’s no long term damage but, as you can imagine, he is very tender and he was in on crutches yesterday, so he is 60-40 not to play. Nicky Maynard has a grade one hamstring tear which will see him out for up to two weeks maximum. It’s not a bad tear.”
Despite the bad luck, Dempster is keen to shrug it off and get on with the task in hand.
“But there’s no point in crying about it. You just have to get on with it.”
Our View
What can go wrong, is going wrong for the Stags. They’ve won one, drawn two and lost one of their opening fixtures, but face a Stevenage side currently struggling at the foot of the table.
If everyone was fit, Mansfield would have a great squad likely to be in the top six, but these injuries are just the start of their issues. Losing Donohue and Mellis is a big blow, neither are likely to feature in the near future and it’s made the squad look very thin indeed.
