‘Going to places like Sunderland and Ipswich is fantastic’ – Wimbledon boss looking forward to tough double-header

Straight talking Wimbledon boss Wally Downes has been giving his thoughts ahead of a tough-looking away day double-header with Ipswich and Sunderland as reported by London News Online.

The Dons travel to Suffolk on Tuesday night than face the long journey north to take on the Black Cats on Saturday.

Wimbledon have yet to record a win this campaign but the prospect of two challenging trips in a week did not daunt Downes who felt the players and fans should relish visits to the league’s bigger outfits after he helped guide them to League One safety last season following a long scrap against relegation.

He said: ‘We wanted to be a League One team, and we are a League One team. Going to places like Sunderland and Ipswich is fantastic for the fans and fantastic for the players. We’ve got to go there and put on a good performance.’ but added ‘We need to be at our best over the next week certainly.’

Downes men picked up their first point of the season when they were held 1-1 by Accrington Stanley at Kingsmeadow on Saturday. They lost last time out away from home when Fleetwood ran out 2-1 winners but did produce some fantastic away performances under Downes at the end of last season during their heroic late charge to safety.

Our View

A tough start for Downes and his side will do well to pick up any points in the next week.

However, what his side lack in ability compared to the squads of Sunderland and Ipswich they make up for in spirit, and they may produce a shock in at least one of the games if either side is not on their metal.

They led at Fleetwood and their away form at the end of last season was up there with the best in the division so teams will do well not to underestimate them.
