Sunderland chairman dismisses defender transfer speculation

Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has dismissed speculation linking the Black Cats with a move for Blackpool defender Ollie Turton.

Rumours were swirling around social media all weekend that Turton was about to sign at the Stadium of Light for a fee of £500,000, but when asked directly by a fan on Twitter to comment, Donald’s reply quashed any links with the player.

The twenty-six-year-old signed for Blackpool from Crewe on a two-year contract with the option of a further twelve months in the summer of 2017 and he’s played in all of Blackpool’s matches so far this season during their impressive unbeaten start to the campaign.

He came through the youth system at Crewe where he made one-hundred and ninety appearances following his first-team breakthrough in 2011.

The versatile full-back can also operate in midfield, and Jack Ross is known to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements particularly in the left-back position following the departure of Bryan Oviedo and Reece James, but after Donald’s comments a move for Turton looks highly unlikely.

Rumours will continue to link Sunderland with any half-decent full-back going until they fill the left-back vacancy in their squad.

Turton is a good player, and Blackpool fans will be happy there is nothing in the story after they lost another quality full-back, Marc Bola, in the summer.

It did look a strange one as Turton is predominantly a right-back and the Black Cats need a left-back.

For this reason, it was probably not a hard one for Donald to publicly dismiss.
