Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has confirmed Oxford United transfer target Matty Taylor is set for a summer departure away from Ashton Gate as reported by Bristol Live.
Oxford United are keen to take the experienced campaigner to the Kassam Stadium, but U’s manager Karl Robinson recently played down the prospect of a deal for Taylor despite the striker being spotted at their 1-0 win over Peterborough United last week.
However, the latest comments by Johnson will add fuel to speculation linking the twenty-nine-year-old with a return to his former club. Indeed, Robinson spoke once again about the need for a striker after the U’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool on Saturday in a game his side dominated for long periods.
Taylor is entering the final year of his contract with the Robins and a potential move to Championship side Charlton Athletic collapsed on deadline day. He’s failed to feature in any of Johnson’s last three matchday squads and watched yesterdays 2-0 victory over QPR from the stands.
Johnson did reveal several clubs from the EFL’s third tier have made offers for the forward who’s fallen down the pecking order with the Robins since his controversial arrival from city rivals Rovers in January 2017. ‘Yes, there’s been a couple of offers for Matty from League One. Obviously, the window is still open there, and we’ve had really good lines of communication with Matty,’ he said.
Our View
Taylor would be a great addition to any League One forward line and Oxford United would be no exception.
While he’s failed to settle at City, he was very impressive at Rovers.
The U’s lack firepower up front after a frustrating summer and fans will be hoping their luck finally changes and they land their man.
One thing does seem inevitable after yesterday’s post-match comments, a striker of some sort will be arriving at the Kassam very soon.
If it is is Taylor, most Oxford fans will be delighted.
