Grimsby Town made another important signing yesterday, adding former Shrewsbury Town defender Luke Waterfall to their squad.
The powerful centre half is perhaps best known for his time with their county rivals Lincoln City, where he lifted both the National League title and the EFL Trophy. His performance in that Wembley final, against Shrewsbury, saw them come back in at the beginning of 2018/19 season to buy the defender.
He played 54 times for Salop last season, but had the remainder of his three-year deal paid up this week as he sought a move closer to home. That’s led him to Blundell Park, where he joins Elliot Whitehouse and Matt Green, two more former Lincoln City players.
All three played key roles in the EFL Trophy win, with Whitehouse bagging the winning goal. They add to an impressive-looking Grimsby side that also includes the likes of James Hanson, a seasoned veteran of the lower leagues.
The move has prompted Lincoln City fans to take to Twitter to poke fun at their rivals, having earned promotion themselves last season. He used to be the subject of a song claiming that he had a ‘magic hat’, something he had made for him by Imps fans at the end of the 2016/17 season.
The Imps are now the highest-placed of all Lincolnshire Football League clubs, a fact they’re keen to remind their rivals of whenever possible.
Nice one @lukew30 All the best matey..👍
Although, I’m intrigued to see who’s the next ‘ex-pat’ from Lincoln..😉

Neither were captains, plus greeny was always my favourite and whitehouse scored the goal to win at Wembley, don’t know just a weird feeling about captains signing for a rival club 😂

Great signing! But was it necessary for the article to remind us that Lincoln reached the FA Cup quarter finals? 🤨 I'd almost suppressed that memory…
