Former Crewe and Walsall defender Jon Guthrie has found a new club following his release by the Saddlers at the end of last season.
The twenty-seven-year-old has signed a two-year contract with SPFL side Livingstone with Livi retaining the option to extend his stay for a further twelve months as reported by the club’s official website.
Guthrie made eighty-eight league outings for the Saddlers after arriving from Crewe in 2017. He made forty-nine appearances across all competitions in 2018/19 but was unable to help prevent the Saddlers relegation from League One and was one of eleven players released by new manager Darrell Clarke at the end of the campaign.
The experienced campaigner will once again link up with former team Nicky Devlin who rejected the offer of a new deal at Walsall to sign for Livi earlier in the summer.
Walsall fans soon took to social media to react to the signing, and it appears Guthrie was far from a fan favourite at the Bescot. Positive comments are hard to find, and it seems clear Saddlers fans were not broken-hearted at his departure with some even expressing surprise he’s managed to find himself a fresh start.
Here is a selection of their comments on Twitter.
Must have a good agent

Not really sure I'd call him a defender when he was at Walsall, he was dreadful

Good for him. Not as bad as some make him out to be. Had some immense games but lacked consistency. Needs a reliable partner.

An excellent defender who can actually play football. Just like us all needs others around us who can do their bit as well. Good luck Jon in Livi 👍🙂

Looks up their odds for relegation 😉

They made up 50% of one of the worst defences in our history however on their day they will do a job for you. I’m unsure on the standards of SPL compared to League 1 but I’d say you’ll concede a fair few!
