Oxford United land Premier League striker

Oxford United have bagged striker Dan Agyei on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee from top-flight Burnley, as reported by their official site.

Oxford ensured their unbeaten start to the season continued yesterday as they beat Peterborough United 1-0, but they will be delighted with the capture of the former Clarets man after losing Gavin Whyte to Cardiff.

Karl Robinson has been in the market for a striker all summer, finally landing a target with 180 minutes of football already played.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed loan spells with Coventry, Walsall and Blackpool, appearing for the latter during the 2018/19 season. He made nine appearances at Bloomfield Road without a goal, but scored five in each of his spells with the two Midlands’ sides.

Robinson was delighted to finally have grabbed a forward, telling the U’s official site; “The fans have been patient and the last week or two have seen plenty of new signings: there are still a couple more to come but Dan gives us something different and will be an exciting player for the fans to watch.

“It will take a week or two before he is involved because he’s not really had a pre-season, but he is fit, he came through the medicals with glowing reports and we are happy to have the chance to work with him ”

Agyei told how he liked the look of the club and how they do things.

“I came down and took a look around and really liked the set up at the club. The training ground, the staff, the players: it is a very ambitious place and I really liked the way everything is done.”

Our View

Agyei had really good spells with Walsall and Coventry; one in three during each of those spells is a good return for a young player. His time at Blackpool wasn’t as fruitful, but he’ll benefit from being able to settle into a team and call it home.

He’s got huge potential and I feel he could be a big asset to the U’s. He’s young, quick and has a proven record behind him during those loan spells.

Good business.
