Sheffield United midfielder closes in on League Two switch

Sheffield United midfielder Samir Carruthers is closing in on a move to League Two side Cambridge United, with manager Colin Calderwood calling his capture the ‘next port of call’ for the U’s, as reported by Cambridge Live.

The U’s drew 0-0 with Newport yesterday, their second 0-0 draw of the campaign, but Calderwood had hoped to have Carruthers on the bench for the fixture.

His proposed loan move from the Premier League side hit a stumbling block as the Blades conducted their outgoing business on deadline day, but Calderwood is now focused on adding him to their ranks this week.

“No we haven’t [managed to agree a loan deal for Carruthers],” he said. “As the [transfer] deadline grew closer for Sheffield United, we always knew it was going to around then. The game obviously grew a little bit closer, their first game of the season.”

Despite the delay, the former Northampton boss is still keen to bring the 26-year-old to the Abbey Stadium.

“The next port of call will be trying to get that one done as I think he’ll be a super, super addition. I really like his personality, added to the skill level he’s got.”

The Ilsington-born midfielder began his career with Cambridge as a youth, later moving to Arsenal and Aston Villa before securing his first professional deal.

He’s since played for MK Dons as well as the Blades and has Eire Under 19 and Under 21 honours to his name.

Our View

This would be a class signing for a League Two side; he could easily do a job in League One. It would be a coup if Calderwood could pull it off and he must be close if he’s happy to discuss it in the papers.

The staggered deadline day has its advantages; the Blades know what their squad looks like now and can farm players out knowing who won’t play and who will. It means a busy period for the lower league clubs, but it also means players they might have missed out on becoming available.
