Cambridge United have added to their ranks today by bringing in striker Marc Richards following his release by Swindon Town, as revealed by their official site.
The veteran 37-year-old has scored 191 goals in a career spanning close to 700 appearances. He’s had eight permanent clubs and was once renowned as one of the finest strikers outside the top two divisions.
With Cambridge drawing 0-0 at the weekend, the need for additional firepower up front was evident and Richards will offer an alternative option despite his advancing years.
He admitted that manager Colin Calderwood was one of the motivating factors behind the switch.
“Working with Colin (Calderwood) before I know what he is all about, I know what his teams are like and that has played a massive factor in me deciding to join Cambridge United.”
Calderwood admitted there was a bit of work to do with Richards, but feels he’ll be a strong addition to the squad.
“Once he has worked on his sharpness with the ball to allow him to find his rhythm again, he’ll really add to the group of players we have now put together in that area of the field,” said the former Northampton boss.
Fans were split on social media, Cambridge supporters looking towards the positive aspects of the move, with some supporters of other clubs heading to social media to mock the U’s.

Yeah you've missed the boat by about 10 years I'm afraid.

Before this summer we went like two years without permanently signing a striker apart from an injury prone Barry Corr. We've all been begging the club to strengthen the forward area and in the space of a week we've signed 3 forwards. Even though he's old he adds even more depth.

Could be a good signing that
