Cheltenham set for striker decision; club also prepare red-card appeal

Striker Jonte Smith is still hopeful of bagging a contract with Cheltenham Town after spending time on trial with the Robins this summer.

The former Crawley and Oxford striker is hoping to remain at Whaddon Road beyond his current temporary spell, having been at the ground as they went down 1-0 at Leyton Orient this weekend.

His cause may be helped after he watched Luke Varney earn a dismissal for a second bookable offence, their first of two red cards.

“As things stand, we are trying to get something over the line and hopefully we can,” said Smith speaking to Gloucestershire Live.

“I would like to sign because I do feel comfortable here, having lived here before. I like the manager and his style of play, the dressing room he has built and the way he runs things.

“I can see myself being happy here and doing well here. There are other clubs interested, including a club in Germany. There are other options in England we haven’t explored yet.”

Smith is a Bermudan international who recently played against Haiti and Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He made one appearance for Oxford last season, having previously been with Lewes for three years.

Along with Varney, Rohan Ince was shown his marching orders for dissent this weekend, but boss Michael Duff intends to appeal the decision. The former Chelsea man was dismissed for throwing a water bottle on the floor, which bounced up and hit the fourth official.

Our View

It was an odd afternoon for the Robins; they were merely bit-part players in the emotional game which saw Leyton Orient honoured their former manager Justin Edinburgh.

As the ‘other’ team they played the role of villain well; Varney was booked for a dive when he should perhaps have had a penalty and then dismissed for an aerial challenge which didn’t seem particularly bad.

Ince won’t get away with his card though, it was a stupid reaction and just the sort of thing the EFL don’t want to see.
