Coventry City face opposition in hunt for 14-goal striker

Coventry City are one of the clubs looking to buy striker Matty Godden from Peterborough, but they’re not alone in their pursuit of the former Scunthorpe man, as reported by Peterborough Today.

The Sky Blues are still reeling from missing out on Nottingham Forest forward Tyler Walker, with the 22-year-old choosing Lincoln City over Mark Robins’ side. With money to spend following the sale of Tom Bayliss and Conor Chaplin, Robins is now turning his attention to Godden.

Posh director of football Barry Fry has confirmed Coventry’s interest in the 27-year-old, but refused to comment on the fee, other than to confirm what would not be accepted.

“We have had numerous bids for Matt, none of which have been accepted. Coventry are one of three League One clubs to have bid for him, but the other two have come in very strongly for the player as well,” Fry said.

Posh, who lost 3-1 at home against Fleetwood this weekend, are not keen on selling the striker, despite him not featuring on the bench this weekend.

“Matt wants regular first-team football at his age. That’s what he told the manager and that’s understandable,” added Fry.

“But we don’t really want him to go. We think in Mo Eisa, Ivan Toney and Matt we have forwards who will score plenty of goals between them.

“Portsmouth were keen, but we turned their bid of £500,000 down because we wanted £750,000. MK Dons also enquired about him. but they didn’t go as far as making a bid.”

It seems if Coventry are serious about buying the striker, their bid needs to be almost three-quarters of a million.

Our View

He’s not worth that. Simple.

Matty Godden is a decent centre forward but, if he was worth that sort of money, he’d be in the Posh squad. He’s not there for a reason; they don’t fancy him up front.

If they don’t fancy him, why on earth should they be making such a big profit on his services?

I can see a deal being done though, the time is ebbing away and Coventry need to add to their squad, despite the 1-0 win against Southend this Saturday.
