Southend set to sign a former Premier League defender

Southend United are poised to sign two defenders with one a former Premier League centre-back as reported by the Southend Echo.

The report claims boss Kevin Bond is on the verge of boosting his threadbare defensive ranks with two additions, one of whom is an experienced campaigner, having made over four hundred career appearances and spent several seasons in the Premier League.

According to the Echo, the unnamed player will be joined at Roots Hall by a defender who is known to Blues fans, and that deal looks to be more advanced with a medical taking place today.

Both deals could be completed in time for the Shrimpers first League One game of the season when they travel to play Coventry City in the Sky Blues first game at Birmingham City’s St Andrews Stadium.

The news will be a welcome boost for Southend fans with the squad looking short on central defensive cover following the return of the impressive Taylor Moore to parent club Bristol City at the end of last season.

Our View

A defender with Premier League experience would be a welcome boost for Kevin Bond who desperately needs to shore up a leaky defence which conceded sixty-eight goals last season.

With the other defender said to be known to Southend fans, rumours have already started on social media that Taylor Moore is returning.

We doubt it, but if he does, Bond will have pulled off a great signing on the eve of the season.
