The midfielder scored eight goals in forty-four appearances in all competitions last season as Sunderland reached the League One play-off final at Wembley but failed to secure promotion.
Speculation he was set to leave the Black Cats began when did not travel on the club’s pre-season trip to Portugal, but the club explained his absence was due to Injury.
The twenty-four-year-old has one year left on his contract at the Stadium of Light having graduated from the club’s academy. He’s made a total of ninety-seven senior outings for the Lads since making his debut in February 2015, but he continues to divide opinion amongst Sunderland supporters, despite being given the club captaincy for another year by manager Jack Ross.
This division was reflected in the reaction to the news by Sunderland fans on social media with some fans actually delighted at the prospect of losing their skipper. Others were severely critical of Honeyman’s ability and suggested his departure would be no significant loss.
Honeyman is one of the club’s top earners, and Ross has plenty of midfield options following the recent arrival of George Dobson from Walsall.
While many supporters wished Honeyman good luck, it was hard to find fans with anything positive to say about him as this small selection of responses to the news on Twitter demonstrates.

Delighted with this. He’s a good lad and I hope the best for him but he’s not even close to what we need in that role in this league, and if we can replace him then great

Lots of running, very committed and loves the club. Other than that not a footballer. Get him out and a bit creativity in that midfield

shows how fickle our fans are soon as a player leaves they are rubbish. Hull have got a bargain and Honeyman will adapt easily into a side who play attacking football he could become the bargain of this transfer window. Good luck George
I can understand some supporters are pleased with this move if it happens but I can’t understand the way they ridicule a local boy who has given his all for our club. Fair enough he isn’t anywhere near our best player but he is our most dedicated player and I would like to thank him for his commitment through probably our worst period in our history. There were many other players over the recent past who were more deserving of the criticism than George Honeyman.
Good luck for the future George your application and commitment deserves a good future in the game.
Good luck to George but he is not good enough to wear the red and white stripes going to Hull I think he will be found out in the championship
Honeyman always give 100% hes a genuine nice lad who give his all for the club , never hid was always honest and commited to the club . Personally i think 400k is not much money and even tho was in last year of contract still thought his value shud of been around the 1 million mark 8 goals last season showed improvement at times but i think maybe a move to a decent club like Hull might benefit him . Good Luck George Lad – Hope you prove the doubters wrong lad .
George has given his all for the lads. And he’s a fan too. Not the best but honest. All the best at Hull, my lad. If you fit into the Championship and do well, you’ll prove all the negative shouters wrong.
His heart was always in the right place but we need an experienced player to be captain…someone who knows how to lead by example.
If I had played for sunderland. A team I’ve supported for 50 year. I would have give 100% every match. But I wasn’t good enough for a pub team. No matter how keen you are ,if you not good enough your not good enough.
