Sunderland striker Will Grigg has been talking up his side ahead of their season opener with Oxford United this weekend.
The striker, signed for £4m from Wigan in the transfer window, struggled after his arrival with injury. He’s now looking forward to a season feeling fully fit, although he admitted it had been one of the toughest pre-seasons he’d endured as a pro.
“Pre-season has been a tough four or five weeks and personally it has been the toughest out of the 10 or 11 I’ve done,” he said.
“For this season to come around it’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to it.”
The 28-year-old arrived with the hopes of the fans resting firmly on his goal-scoring shoulders. With Josh Maja leaving the club they needed an injection of class up front. What they got was a half-fit Grigg who struggled to adapt.
He scored four goals in 17 league matches, one of which was a penalty. Not the sort of level expected of such an illustrious signing.
His words might be the right ones to say before the big kick off, but some of the supporters are keen to see goals, not hear empty promises, as you’ll read below.
