‘Was hoping he’d miss the season’ – These unconcerned Sunderland fans react to latest injury update

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has revealed captain George Honeyman is facing a race to be fit for the start of the season.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Ross explained the twenty-four-year-old recently picked up a knee injury which meant it was pointless him travelling to Portugal with the rest of the squad for their pre-season camp and that it was ‘touch and go’ he’d be ready for the Black Cats League One season opener at home to Oxford United on 3 August.

Honeyman is set to continue as club captain for the 2019/20 season after making forty-four appearances last season. The Black Cats academy graduate has made ninety-seven senior appearances for the Lads since making his debut in February 2015, but he continues to divide opinion amongst Sunderland supporters.

The social media reaction to the news of Honeyman’s injury undoubtedly reflects this division, with some fans unconcerned he may miss the season opener and posting negative remarks about their captain.

Here is a selection of their responses to the news on Twitter.
