Former MK Dons loanee given green light to find new club

QPR manager Mark Warburton has given forward David Wheeler the green light to find a new club after the 28-year-old seldom featured throughout the Rs pre-season campaign.

Spending the latter stages of last season on loan at League Two outfit Milton Keynes Dons, linking up with former manager Paul Tisdale, Wheeler found the back of the net 4 times in 19 appearances whilst also contributing 2 assists.

Wheeler quickly became a fans’ favourite in the final handful of games, even more so after finding the back of the net in the 1-0 victory over Mansfield to secure the Dons’ promotion.

His first half of the season had been at League One promotion-chasing Portsmouth, but the Brighton-born forward struggled at Fratton Park – only featuring 11 times for Kenny Jackett’s side.

With Wheeler now granted his exit from Loftus Road, assumedly for a nominal fee with just 11 months left on his contract, MK Dons fans are wishing for the return of their promotion hero.

Tisdale had indeed inquired about the possibility of returning Wheeler to MK1, alongside a number of loan players from the promotion-winning campaign, but budget restraints after the purchase of Cardiff City striker Rhys Healey could make this a challenge.

Having found the back of the net three times in a Central Development League match – albeit with both sides fielding a plethora of first-teamers – back in March with Plymouth Argyle, Wheeler went on to again score on the coming Saturday in the 3-1 win over Macclesfield Town.

A later 3 goals in the final 4 games of the season proved vital in securing the points to push the Dons over the promotion line.

But it wasn’t just his goals that Wheeler brought to the side – his enthusiasm and athleticism brought a different dimension to the MK Dons attack.

Were the funds available to purchase their former player, Wheeler could be another excellent addition to a Milton Keynes side who many are beginning to see as dark horses in League One this season.
