Gillingham in talks to sign in-demand striker

Gillingham are in negotiations to sign former Colchester United forward Mikael Mandron as reported by Kent Online.

However, they are facing competition from several League One rivals according to the report with the twenty-four-year-old attracting lots of interest.

The forward has been training with the Gills throughout the summer and scored from the penalty spot against Millwall at the weekend. He also hit the target in the recent 4-0 win over Folkestone.

The report claims Evans tried to sign Mandron when he was the manager of Peterborough last summer, and the Gills boss said he was ‘hopeful’ this time he would get a deal over the line. He said: ‘I have made it clear we would like to keep him. The agent is in talks with the chairman (Paul Scally), and we will see where those chats go in the next 24-48 hours.’

‘It’s amazing, He comes to us for a few weeks, and then all of a sudden three or four League 1 clubs crop up and want him, but we hope we can get it done.’

Mandron made ninety-five appearances for Colchester during his two-year stay in Essex, scoring twelve goals. He was released by the League Two club at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Bristol Rovers have previously been linked with the striker who began his career at Sunderland.

Our View

We rate Mandron and think he will be an excellent signing for the Gills, providing a focal point for their attacks.

We detect a bit of bluster from Evans, Mandron has been linked with other clubs, but his stay in Kent plainly puts the club in the driving seat for his signature.
