Carlisle United have received a transfer boost with the news that Nathan Thomas is set to return to Brunton Park.
Thomas joined Gillingham three weeks ago on a season-long loan, but he’s agreed to a termination of his stay in Kent to reunite with the Cumbrians.
The News & Star report the Sheffield United winger’s family have not settled well in Kent, opening the door for a return to the Blues. The twenty-four-year-old made sixteen appearances in a successful loan spell in the second half of last season, but in an unusual turn of events, Carlisle now look to have landed their man after missing out on him earlier in the summer.
Speaking to the News & Star, manager Steven Pressley said; ‘If truth be told Nathan right from the close of the season was one of my main targets. He made a good impression not just on the field, but he’s a popular lad in the dressing room and with the staff.
‘We were obviously disappointed when he chose to go to Gillingham – understandably so as they’re a League One club and every professional wants to better themselves.’
‘But an opportunity arose ten days ago when his agent phoned me and explained that not everything was right with Nathan down there, and would I be interested in taking him back? And of course, I was.’
Pressley went on to add he was confident all the relevant paperwork would soon be completed to allow the club to make an official announcement confirming the signing in the next twenty-four hours. He also confirmed it was likely Thomas would be involved in Carlisle’s final pre-season friendly at Ross County this weekend.

Our View
A tremendous boost for concerned Carlisle supporters who’ve been disappointed at the lack of signings at the club and its failure to land its main transfer targets.
Gillingham should be commended for letting the unsettled player leave the club on compassionate grounds, and their loss will be the Cumbrians gain.
Thomas is an excellent signing and will probably now spend the season at Brunton Park in a move that will delight Carlisle fans.
