Ipswich Town take former Sheffield United defender on trial

Former Sheffield United and Oldham defender James Wilson is training with Ipswich Town, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

Wilson has most recently been on the books of Lincoln City, but had his contract terminated by mutual consent this summer with a year left to run. He joined the Imps from Sheffield United, having previously been with Oldham, Walsall and Bristol City.

Wilson’s last appearance for the Imps came on February 2nd in a 1-1 draw at Notts County, but he’d been kept out of the side by Jason Shackell and Michael Bostwick prior to that rare outing.

Lincoln manager Danny Cowley confirmed the duo kept Wilson out of the side after he left the club.

“James played his part in our success last season. He didn’t play as much as he would have liked because he was behind two very, very consistent performers in Michael Bostwick and Jason Shackell. That meant his opportunities were limited.

“James wanted to play and we had to free up some space in the budget, hence we’ve been able to do this.”

Wilson joined up with the Ipswich squad at Playford Road on Wednesday for their first day back training since returning from their pre-season tour of Germany, during which they were beaten by Third Division side Meppen as well as Fortuna Dusseldorf.

The 30-year-old, who was once capped by Wales, could potentially be involved in the Tractor Boys friendly against Colchester this Friday.

Our View

Wilson still has plenty to offer a club in League One. he was outstanding for Walsall before his move to Lincoln, having been there on loan.

He never recovered from breaking an ankle in March 2018. Once he came back to full fitness he found first team football hard and was often left out on the right hand side of defence, covering for Neal Eardley.

Given a run in his rightful position in the middle of the park, he could be a valuable asset for the Tractor Boys. He’s got the right pedigree, is experienced at this level and has a point to prove himself.
