Gillingham have tabled a bid for an unnamed striker, as well as running an eye over former Colchester man Mikael Mandron, as reported by Kent Online.
Manager Steve Evans confirmed he had tabled an offer for a striker, but remain tight-lipped about the player’s identity, but it’s believed that he would be coming from a higher division.
“We’ve got one bid on the table for a striker, thank you to the chairman,” said Evans.
“Whether that gets accepted we will know on Monday. I don’t think we’ve bought a player as a football club for a little while. We’re trying to do something positive and we’re trying to do one or two other players as well – I think four in total we’re trying to do.
“I’ll be absolutely delighted if we get the four of them because we’d be significantly stronger.”
He also had Mandron on trial this weekend as they beat Folkestone 4-0 in their latest friendly. The former Sunderland man was a target for Evans last season and is understood to be a target for several League One clubs.
“We tried to buy him at Peterborough United last summer and we couldn’t get him in the door. We’re just looking at him, he’s got options in League 1 that he can go and take now.
“He’s given me his word that he’ll be here until the middle of the week and probably by then we’ll know where we are with different things, and then we’ll make a decision – positive or negative.”
He also cast an eye over free agent Joe Skarz, a player he knows from his time in charge of Rotherham.
Our View
Gillingham need firepower. They’ve had a good pre-season elsewhere on the field, but with just two strikers on their roster currently, they have to find that final piece of the jigsaw.
If they get it wrong, it could spell trouble for Evans. However, he’s usually very good at pulling a rabbit out of the hat and his transfer dealings so far suggest he’s got a certain charm that can entice quality players to Priestfield.
