Former Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie has become Walsall’s second signing of the day and tenth of the summer the club have announced.
The thirty-two-year-old has made over one hundred Premier League appearances and counts Blackburn Rovers and Fulham amongst his former clubs having come through the ranks at Liverpool.
The former England Under-16 international made seven appearances for the Reds and enjoyed loan spells at Southampton and Bolton before leaving for Tyneside in 2008.
He made one hundred and four appearances in four years at St James’ Park and was influential in the Magpies team that amassed one hundred and two points on their way to the 2009/10 Championship title.
Guthrie had been on trial at the Saddlers after returning from a spell in Indonesia and featured in their recent pre-season friendly at Leamington.
Walsall fans were generally delighted with the signing and much more enthusiastic than for the clubs first signing of the day, winger Wes McDonald, which was greeted with a far more muted response.
Here is a selection of Saddlers fans happy responses to the news Shrewsbury born Guthrie had put pen to paper on a deal, the length of which was not disclosed by the club.
Best signing this window. Get in Clarke you beautiful man

As a replacement for George Dobson, this will do nicely 👊. Adds some much needed experience to the squad. Has a rocket of a shot in his locker too so hopefully he'll score a screamer or two. Welcome Danny 🔴🔴🔴
