Experienced winger joins Oldham’s pre-season training camp

Former Manchester United and Burnley winger Chris Eagles is with Oldham Athletic on their pre-season training camp in Morocco as reported by the Oldham Times.

The thirty-three-year-old came through the ranks at Old Trafford and made seventeen senior appearances for United before embarking on a nomadic career that has seen him play for Burnley, Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic, Bury, Accrington and Port Vale.

While at United Eagles also enjoyed loan spells at Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.

The much-travelled winger has been without a club since leaving SPFL side Ross County in April 2018 but is part of the Oldham squad in Agadir.

The report claims Eagles is looking to impress new Oldham coach Laurent Banide in Morocco and earn a deal before the Latics begin their League Two season at Forest Green Rovers on 3 August.

Our View

Eagles might have been a decent League Two signing a year or two ago, but he appears well past his best and hasn’t played for over a year.

It could work if he gets fit and perhaps signs a pay as you play deal but to offer a permanent contract would seem a folly for Oldham.

However, we wouldn’t be surprised by anything under the current ownership at Boundary Park, and it will be interesting to see how this one pans out.
