Leyton Orient lodge bid for League One striker

Leyton Orient have placed a bid for Shrewsbury Town striker Lee Angol as they look to replace the departed Macauley Bonne, as reported by the Shropshire Star.

It’s known manager Sam Ricketts is open to allowing Angol to leave. He joined as a late replacement for Stefan Payne last summer, but after a decent start struggled to make an impact at the New Meadow.

That led to a loan spell with Lincoln City, the side he helped to a National League title in 2017, but after just two outings from the bench, he returned to Salop.

Angol began his career with Wycombe, having been on the books of Spurs as a youth. He had loan spells with Hendon, Maidenhead and Boreham Wood before moving to Luton Town. A prolific loan spell back at Boreham Wood led to his Kenilworth Road exit without making an appearance.

League One Peterborough picked him up and saw him score 11 in 38, but he fell down the pecking order and ended up first on loan at Lincoln, then with Mansfield Town on a permanent deal, where he netted 10 times in 34 matches.

Our View

Angol is a tricky striker, with a good turn of pace and upper body strength. Still only 24, he needs a club that will play him regularly through the middle, ideally as part of a two-man attack.

Orient played a 4-4-2 for 66% of their matches last season and if they do the same this year, Angol would be the perfect striker for them. We could see him fitting well with Matt Harold, an imposing presence who could do much of the ball retention.
