Departing Doncaster star to bag Championship switch

Doncaster Rovers captain of last season, Tommy Rowe, is close to a move to Championship side Bristol City, as reported by the Bristol Post.

The midfielder helped his side to a play-off semi-final, but missed the crucial penalty in the shoot out against Charlton that cost them a place at Wembley.

He had been offered new terms by then-boss Grant McCann, but turned them down in favour of a more lucrative switch. He’s now close to securing that switch, with the Championship side reportedly close to agreeing on a deal.

It will be their second swoop for a lower league player in as many days following the capture of 23-year-old Sammie Szmodics yesterday.

30-year-old Rowe started his career with Stockport County, also representing Peterborough, Wolves and Doncaster. He won the League One play-offs in 2011 with Posh, as well as lifting the 2014 EFL Trophy.

He’s made 123 appearances in the Championship, spread across his time with Peterborough and with Wolves.

Our View

This is a surprising one. We could see Rowe moving on, but not to a Championship club, a decent one at that.

That’s no slur on the lad, but he had seemingly missed the boat when it came to playing in a side focused on a top six finish. Lee Johnson’s side are always in the mix, but never quite seem to have enough.

Whether Szmodics and Rowe can settle quicker than Mo Eisa will go some way to defining whether they’re there this season or not.
