‘Was hoping it was Mayor’ – Tranmere fans respond to latest signing

Versatile defender Calum Woods has signed for Tranmere Rovers on a one-year deal following his release from Bradford City.

The thirty-two-year-old full-back became Micky Mellon’s second summer signing as he looks to build a squad to challenge in League One next season.

Woods brings a wealth of experience to Prenton Park from a career that includes promotions to the Scottish Premier League with Dunfermline and the Championship with Huddersfield and Preston.

Most Tranmere fans on social media were happy with signing that will bring defensive cover in a variety of positions to Mellon’s squad, but some were feeling a little disappointed that the Bury winger Danny Mayor was not the man holding the blue and white scarf aloft.

Social media has been alive with rumours linking Mayor with a move to Prenton Park, and many fans thought they had landed the recently promoted winger when Tranmere broke the news they were about to announce a signing.

Speculation has continued to link Mayor with Tranmere amongst fans even though the link has not been seen in the usual trusted sources and denied local journalists.

For instance, Matthew Jones, a host of a local radio show and author of a book about Tranmere recently tweeted he felt a deal for Mayor was very unlikely.

Here is a selection of responses on Twitter to the signing of Woods from fans who hoped it was Mayor and some from those who recognised it has a good solid signing.
