Dundee United are in talks with Lawrence Shankland’s representatives over a move to Tannadice as reported by the Daily Record.
The twenty-three-year-old netted thirty-four times in forty-one appearances for Ayr United last season and is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with the Honest Men.
The striker has been heavily linked with a move to the Stadium of Light amid speculation several Championship clubs are also keen on the striker, most notably Hull City.
According to the Record, Dundee United have made a move to sign the in-demand hitman, who they see as the man with the ability to fire them back into Scotland’s top flight following last season’s playoff penalty heartbreak which condemned the Tangerines to their fourth season in Scotland’s second tier.
The news will concern Mackem fans following rumoured targets Stewart Downing, Josh Koroma, George Edmundson and Freddie Ladapo all sealing moves elsewhere in the past week.

Concerned Sunderland fans will feel they are being left behind in the market with rivals and League One big-hitters such as Portsmouth and Peterborough all making recent successful moves to strengthen their squads
Chairman Stewart Donald has recently stated his side need to make up to eight signings this summer, but as yet, none have been forthcoming.
It seems clear the proposed takeover of the majority of Donald’s shareholding by American-based Mark Campbell is holding up the Black Cats summer recruitment and needs to be sorted quickly for the club to make moves in the market and Shankland might well be another one that gets away.
