Rotherham make £500,000 move for 18-goal Sunderland target

Rotherham United have made a move in the hunt for Plymouth striker Freddie Ladapo with a half-a-million pound bid as reported by Plymouth Live.

The 18-goal forward has been in high demand this summer, with Portsmouth and Sunderland credited with an interest.

Pompey pulled out of the race citing the player’s wage demands as excessive, apparently leaving Sunderland at the head of the queue. That’s now been thrown into doubt, with the Black Cats still in the throes of a takeover.

Rotherham, relegated from the Championship at the end of the season, are thought to have lodged a bid for the former Crystal Palace and Margate striker, who had an impressive season despite the Pilgrims being relegated.

He struggled for goals at Southend after leaving Crystal Palace, but thrived with the creative influences of Ruben Lameiras and Graham Carey behind him.

Ladapo began his career with Colchester United but dropped out of the Football League. He impressed at Margate, earning a Premier League move to Palace, but only appeared once, against Manchester United, before switching to Southend.

Our View

This is a shock; Rotherham hadn’t been mentioned by many as a possible destination for Ladapo, but he’d be a big signing for them.

He’s proven in League One, which makes him the ideal man to lead their line this coming season.

He’s big and strong, can cope with robust defenders but proved he can score goals too.

Over to you now, Sunderland.
