Blow for Portsmouth as Aberdeen hold positive talks with transfer target

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is still in talks with Gary Mackay-Steven over the sought after winger’s future as reported by the Daily Record.

Mackay-Steven was heavily linked with a move to Portsmouth with suggestions the twenty-eight-year-old was having a medical at Fratton Park this week something the Dons boss denied. McInnes also believes there is a chance Scotland international will stay at Pittodrie after holding positive talks with the out of contract player this week.

McInnes said: ‘Gary said he’s not having a medical, but he’s certainly having a look at one or two things.’

‘I believe Gary is talking to one or two clubs and he’s got options.’

‘As recently as yesterday he was still telling me, he is definitely considering staying – but I need him to want to stay.’

McInnes added that if the player decides he wants to stay at Aberdeen, the door is still open for him to sign a new deal.

The news comes after it was revealed Pompey had pulled out of the chase for MK Dons striker Chuks Aneke amid concerns from supporters over the club’s failure to land its transfer targets.

Better news does seem to be around the corner for Pompey fans after recent reports Ipswich striker Ellis Harrison was spotted at the club’s training ground and in talks to move to the South Coast.

Our View

It is currently a very competitive market and it appears the player is wavering on the move to Pompey which seemed done and dusted earlier this week.

Reading between the lines another club may have come in for him at the last minute, but this is only conjecture.

Portsmouth fans should not be too concerned over this one, he still might sign, and his desire to stay at Aberdeen may well be a negotiating ploy.

If he doesn’t put pen to paper, it is going to be a long window, and there may well be better options out there.
