Blow for Sunderland as transfer target reveals Championship ambitions

Sunderland have been eyeing a move for Rotherham winger Jon Taylor as a potential replacement for Lewis Morgan as reported by the Northern Echo.

The report claimed that Sunderland had opened talks about bringing the twenty-six-year-old to the Stadium of Light.

However, when discussing his future and reasons for wanting to leave the Millers, Taylor stated that his ambition was to stay in the Championship adding he felt he still had a lot to offer in the second tier. He told the Sheffield Star: “Hopefully, I can stay in the Championship, I think I have more to give in that division.’

Relegated Rotherham’s record signing made thirty Championship starts last season, scoring four goals, and said it was the frustration of being in and out of Paul Warne’s relegated side, with the manager keen on rotating his wingers, that led to his decision to reject the offer of a new deal to stay at the New York Stadium.

According to the Northern Echo Barnsley and Luton are both interested in a move for Taylor, who spent three seasons with Rotherham after moving from Peterborough for £400,000 in 2016, and suggests their interest could scupper any deal.

After Taylor’s recent comments, it appears Sunderland may not be the pacey wide player’s prefered destination.

Our View

Sunderland fans are eager for new signing, and all the takeover talk seems to be hampering their progress, and it appears things need to get settles off the pitch before the club can make progress in re-shaping their squad.

Taylor is pacey and hard-working but often frustrated Rotherham supporters with his end product.

In that respect, he might be the ideal replacement for Lewis Morgan who often gave Sunderland fans the same frustration.

In our view, Taylor might get a Championship club, but it wouldn’t be a massive blow to Sunderland if he did.
