Shrewsbury nab Millwall legend on season-long loan

Shrewsbury Town have picked up Millwall stalwart Steve Morison on a season-long loan deal, as announced by their official club site.

The 35-year-old becomes the third summer signing for the Shrews, departing the Den just one appearance shy of 200 in the league.

He still has a year left on his contract and once that’s complete, he’s likely to be in line for a testimonial. However, counting Leeds and Norwich as his previous clubs, the veteran has surely played his final game for the Lions.

He revealed to the Shropshire Star that it was a tough decision to leave the club he originally signed for in 2009, and again in 2013.

“It was a sad day to leave Millwall,” he said.

“However I wanted to join what Sam’s doing here. The opportunity has come up here and he’s been well backed by the chairman.

“It’s nice to come down today and see the ground and the training ground, you can really see what Sam’s trying to put into place. His backroom staff are fantastic as well.

“I can’t wait to get involved, as I said earlier it was a tough moment when the realisation came that I had to leave Millwall, but coming here and meeting Sam and the Chairman has put a smile back on my face.”

Morison began his career with Northampton, before drifting into the non-league scene with Bishop’s Stortford and Stevenage. He first joined Millwall in 2009, moving to Norwich City a year later.

After two years in the Premier League, he went to Leeds, before joining Millwall on a season-long loan and then a permanent deal.

Our View

He’s played 15 matches in the Championship in the last year, but his time at that level looks to be over. He’s a former teammate of Sam Ricketts and that’s surely a driving force behind the move.

Shrewsbury will certainly benefit from having him around the club. his experience speaks for itself and although he probably won’t score 20 a season at his age, he’s certainly shown enough at Millwall to suggest his playing days are not yet over.
