Shrewsbury Town are set to complete the signing of experienced Millwall striker Steve Morison as reported by the Shropshire Star.
The veteran striker will become Shrews boss Sam Ricketts’ third signing of the summer.
The Millwall skipper has made more than six hundred career appearances and is a former teammate of Ricketts, the pair linking up on Wales international duty. Morrison has twenty-caps for the Dragons.
The thirty-five-year-old has been a huge part of the Lions’ success in recent years, being an integral part of a Millwall side that won promotion from League One in 2017, netting nineteen goals that campaign. He’s scored ninety-two goals for the Lions in three hundred and thirty appearances across three separate spells at the club.
Morison is contracted at the Den for another year after activating a clause in his contract but speaking to London News Online in May he admitted his future was unclear after a disappointing campaign which saw his game time managed and limited to fifteen starts from which he returned one goal.
The powerful frontman, who turns thirty-six at the end of August, is currently doing his coaching badges with Ricketts according to the report and his signing would follow the arrival of Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Daniel Udoh into Ricketts squad.
Our View
Morison is nothing if not a fierce competitor and will add power, experience and guile to the Shrews frontline if the report is accurate.
One hundred and eighty-eight career goals prove he is not shy in front of the posts, and he will give the Shrews a focal point for their attacks and leadership in the dressing room.
His age will be a concern to Shrews fans but he is more than capable of doing a job in League One.
Many Millwall fans will be sad to see him go but will also recognise that the Championship is probably now beyond him and it is time to look for younger legs up front.
