Oxford United have enquired about the compensation fee required to secure the services of Scotland international Chris Cadden as reported by the Glasgow Evening Times.
Motherwell would be entitled to a fee for the twenty-two-year-old under the FIFA solidarity mechanism, which states clubs must receive compensation for training players between their twelfth and twenty-third birthdays. The report claims under the rules, Motherwell are entitled to around £270,000 for the signature of the midfielder.
Cadden is currently a free agent, but there is an offer of a new deal on the table ar Fir Park and the Evening Times reports that the club has yet to receive firm confirmation from Oxford that they are willing to pay compensation for the player, leaving them in the dark over his future.
Motherwell will also be due five per cent of any future sale should the versatile player make a move south.
Cadden endured a stop-start campaign in 2018/19, missing four months of the season through injury. He did return to action before the season’s end making twenty-five appearances in total, some of which were at wing-back.
He made his full Scotland debut in May 2018 in a 2–0 defeat to Peru and the Evening Times reports he is about to end his long association with Motherwell.
Our View
Karl Robinson has recently stated that new signings are close and this could be one of them.
We are no experts on Scottish football, but Cadden does have over one hundred senior appearances at Fir Park to his name and two international caps, so there is potential.
Nonetheless, the sort of money mentioned in the report does look rather high, and if he does end up at Oxford, he will have to hit the ground running to convince Oxford United fans he was worth it.
