Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has lashed out at a club he’s been dealing with in League Two, but stops short of naming the club.
It seems he’s referring to Oldham Athletic and Posh’s attempts to sign George Edmundson, the young central defender currently attracting interest from Glasgow Rangers.
News broke last week that Posh had a bid accepted for the player, but the usually vocal Macanthony didn’t respond to that speculation. However, he’s broken his silence in spectacular fashion this evening with a series of tweets looking to clarify the situation.
He’s claimed:
- Posh DID have a deal agreed with the club
- The player WAS due to attend London Road to thrash out the deal
- With less than 36 hours to go, the club tried to renegotiate that deal, threatening to CALL IT OFF if the terms were not improved.
The unnamed club won’t get a chance to call it off now, as MacAnthony has said in 12 years of being a chairman he has never had a club try to change the terms of an agreed deal after it has been agreed,

To club last Friday for medical & contract discussions day after he returned from holiday. 3 days prior a story leaked we’d agreed a fee and full detail on all aspects of transfer out there for all to see. Nothing new in football & expected. Other clubs see article (it worked) –

So those clubs agreed fee. Our Friday appointment with player still happening as per our agreement with club who owns him. 36 hours before this meeting with player, club contacts us to state our deal is off unless we pay more blah blah 🙄. I won’t budge as a deal is a deal imo –

We then told we no longer allowed meet player on Friday unless we renegotiate with his club. Out of principal I won’t do it. Had lots happen over transfers in 12 years BUT never had club try pull that re an agreed transfer that was hammered out in person and by email etc – So

I now officially pulling us from deal. Could have remained silent but due to leak from last week it’s important our fans know truth re the deal. And I most certainly won’t be dealing with said club owners involved ever again. Been in football 12 years but still get new surprises

We’ve had phenomenal window so far & still few more bits to add but in great shape. Can’t land them all unfortunately but will always keep trying. Said club in all this threatened legal action if I spoke (irony after all leaks on deal last week🤣). Hope that clears it all up 👍🏻

Our View
MacAnthony doesn’t want to name the club and rightly so, but they have been linked with George Edmundson and he seems to be the only defender they’ve been mentioned as pursuing in League One.
It’s clearly a situation that has surprised the Posh owner. football is a mercenary game, but the transparency will give some insight into how certain clubs like to operate.
It’s a less than ideal situation and at the centre of it all a young player who is hoping to improve his own position.

Behind Ant Gerrard, Pete Wild and most notably Paul Scholes who have found AL an impossible person to deal with rationally
Sorry MacAnthony but a deal is not deal until the player signs, the club have every right to pull the deal if another club comes in with a bigger offer, also you could pull the deal if your manager says he wants another player who is cheaper, which i am sure you would do.
