‘We’re still conversing’ – Colchester boss confirms talks about extending the stay of experienced midfielder

Colchester United are in talks with Sam Saunders about extending his stay at the club as reported by the Daily Gazette.

The Thirty-five-year-old midfielder signed a short-term contract with the U’s in March following his release by Wycombe Wanderers, and John McGreal has confirmed he would like to keep Saunders beyond the expiration of his contract next month.

Speaking to the Gazette, McGreal said: ‘We’re still conversing with Sam.,’ but then added that a deal was not straightforward as the player was weighing up all his options. ‘He has one or two different things that he’s considering on the football front, at this moment in time.’

The Former Brentford midfielder made six appearances for the U’s and impressed in his short time with the club, finishing on the losing side only once, and the U’s are eager to keep him as they build for next season.

Saunders is vastly experienced, and successful having won promotion with three different clubs during his long professional career, having come through the ranks at QPR.

He left Wycombe in the search for first-team football after his opportunities became limited following the Chairboys promotion to League One.

Our View

Saunders has a lot to offer a League Two midfield even though he will be thirty-six in August.

He is technically excellent and can run a match when he is on his game.

He will also add promotion winning experience to McGreal squad as they look to push on from last season agonising failure to reach the playoffs.

A good signing for Colchester if they land their man.
