28-year-old Cheltenham midfielder set for departure

Kevin Dawson’s departure from Cheltenham Town now looks inevitable as reported by Gloucestershire Live.

The twenty-eight-year-old midfielder has rejected the offer of a new deal, and the report claims the club have had no contact with the Irishman and a search for his replacement is underway.

Dawson signed from Yeovil Town on a two-year deal in 2017 after spending four and a half years with the Glovers. He went on to make seventy-two appearances for the Robins across all competitions finding the net eleven times.

Injury hampered his progress during the first half of the 2018/19 season, but he returned to the side in December, becoming one of Cheltenham’s most consistent performers during the second half of the campaign as they climbed away from the bottom of the table to finish sixteenth, their highest finish in six years.

The attack-minded central midfielder had intimated he wanted to stay at Cheltenham and that he was enjoying his football under Michael Duff but it now appears he will be on his way to pastures new.

Our View

Cheltenham fans will be surprised and disappointed at this news; the player looked settled and keen to stay with the Robins.

There is a feelgood factor at the club at the moment with many pundits predicting good things for the Robins next season.

He is a good League Two midfielder who could make the step up to League One, and it is no surprise there are suitors.

In the end, money often talks in football, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Some of Cheltenham’s local rivals do have the financial backing to offer better terms, and it might not be a long journey for Dawson to his new club.
