Bristol Rovers close in on another big summer signing

Bristol Rovers are close to securing a big summer deal; literally.

Bristol Live have received confirmation that they’re closing in on a deal for 23-year-old Jordi van Stappershoef, a Dutch keeper and free agent following his release from FC Volendam.

The stopper, who stands 6ft 6in tall, has allegedly been the subject of a medical with Graham Coughlan’s side and is due to put pen to paper today on a deal.

He’ll be a replacement for Jack Bonham, the on-loan keeper who had been thought to be close to a Gas return, before signing terms with Steve Evans’ Gillingham last week.

Van Stappershoef made 20 starts for FC Volendam last season as they finished in the bottom five of their division, the second-tier of Dutch football. He kept five clean sheets in total and is known for his huge physical presence and ability to deal with a cross.

If he signs, he’ll be the fourth capture of the summer, all players of a defensive mind. In addition to the keeper, Graham Coughlan has already bagged Tom Davies, Mark Little and Josh Hare.

Our View

Little is really known about the keeper; I’m not going to come on here and claim to be an expert in the Dutch second tier.

He’s big, he plays in goal and he’s had regular football recently. That’s about as much as we know, but with two keepers being released last season and Bonham not returning, Rovers do need a stopper or two in the squad.
