Doncaster Rovers have secured a coup with the capture of Glenn Middleton, on loan from Glasgow Rangers.
The Daily Record reports that the wide man will join up with Doncaster on a season-long loan, despite having played 28 times for Rangers last season. He bagged five goals for Steven Gerrard’s side, but will play League One football next season.
The 19-year-old began his career with Norwich City, despite having been born in Glasgow. His family relocated to Northampton when he was young, leading him to Carrow Road.
He ended up back at Ibrox in January 2018, linking up with his former youth team boss at Norwich, Graeme Murty. He’s been capped by Scotland up to Under 21 level, but has yet to break into the senior side.
He’ll join a Doncaster side looking to go one better than last season. They finished in the top six, but were beaten in a thrilling play-off semi-final encounter against Charlton Athletic, who went on to earn promotion.
Our View
This has the hallmarks of a top, top signing. Middleton has impressed this season, he hasn’t been a regular as such, but it was a breakthrough campaign for him.
He’s young and ambitious and will get regular football at the Keepmoat. That could be enough to nudge him towards full international honours and perhaps a first-team place at Ibrox the following season.
