‘We are lucky to have him’ – These Wycombe fans are delighted with recent club development

Wycombe’s iconic centre forward Adebayo Akinfenwa will be with them for another season after agreeing on a one-year contract.

The 37-year-old, known as ‘the Beast’, has become a cult hero at Adams Park for his bulking physique and longevity. Most forwards have long since past their sell-by date at 37, but Akinfenwa has been as effective as ever for Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

He was just as happy as the supporters, tweeting how he was ‘honoured’ to be playing League One football for another season.

“Delighted, honoured & blessed to have signed another year. I actually can wait a lot longer for pre-season to start but can’t wait for the actual season to get underway.”

Akinfenwa will be entering his 19th season as a professional, having started out with Lithuanian side FK Atlantas in 2001. That didn’t go well and he ended up back in the UK with Barry Town. He’s since represented 12 different clubs, making 673 appearances and scoring 214 goals.

Last season he bagged six in 31, fresh off the success of promotion the year before.

Wycombe supporters have warmly welcomed the news on Twitter, although they’re hoping for another announcement and another key player staying too.
