Rotherham in hunt for recently released Villa midfielder

Rotherham United have been linked with a summer move for recently released Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Lyden.

The Australian has struggled with injuries at Villa Park and spent the first half of the campaign at League Two Oldham Athletic, scoring once in fourteen appearances in a bid to get game time.

The twenty-three-year-old came through the youth ranks at Villa but featured in only eight matches for the claret and blues, including four Premier League outings. His last appearance came back in September 2017, in a 2-0 League Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.

Sun journalist Alan Nixon tweeted that the Millers were keen on the youngster but faced competition from newly promoted League One Tranmere Rovers and Southend United who he claimed were the front runners to capture Lyden’s signature.

Our View

After fourteen years with Villa Lyden now has the chance to establish himself as an EFL player and Rotherham would be a good move for him.

The Millers are looking to mount a challenge to get promoted back to the Championship at the first attempt, and Lyden would add a certain quality to their midfield.

Wherever he ends up, he needs to put the disappointment of not breaking through at Villa and get his head down and work hard to show the promise that attracted Villa to sign him in the first place.
